Far, far away in a dense forest, near a river, there lived a monkey.
(๑)ณ ดินแดนป่าใหญ่อันไกลโพ้น ลิงทะโมนมั่นอยู่คู่ละหาน
In the middle of the river, there was a tiny island filled with all kinds of fruit trees.
มีเกาะน้อยลอยกลางระหว่างธาร หลากตระการแมกไม้ทุกสายพันธุ์
Every time when the monkey was hungry, he jumped onto a rock in the river and then to the island and ate his fill.
(๒)ยามเจ้าจ๋อจุกหิวท้องกิ่วแกร่ว กระโดดแนวหินหนักรหัทนั่น
ข้ามขึ้นเกาะคว้าไขว่ผลไม้พลัน แลสุขสันต์เสพลิ้มอิ่มสกนธ์
Not far from where the monkey lived, there lived a crocodile couple.
(๓)ไม่ไกลนักจักมีกุมภีล์ใหญ่ เป็นคู่ใจครองขวัญสัมพันธ์ผล
They had tried many times to catch the monkey, but in vain.
พยายามหลายคราคว้าลิงซน จะกี่หนก็แห้วให้แป้ว, ปลง
One day the crocodile's wife said, "I have come up with the perfect plan to catch that monkey!"
(๔)มาวันหนึ่งขนิษฐากุมภาหญิง มีแผนชิงลิงน้อยคล้อยประสงค์
จึงจำนรรจ์ท่านพี่ฤดีตรง "น้องจักชงแผนฉกชกชนม์ลิง"
"Really?" Said her husband, "I doubt we'll ever catch him, he's too clever for us!"
(๕)"จริงจริงเหรอเธอจ๋าอย่าล้อเล่น" "เจ้าจ๋อเด่นด้วยสง่าปัญญายิ่ง"
Oh! He may be clever but with this plan, it'll be as easy to catch him as it is to pick a fruit!"
"โอ้แน่นอนน้องมีแผนดีจริง" "เดี๋ยวเจ้าลิงเสร็จเราช่างเชาว์มัน"
Replied his wife and she whispered her plan to him.
(๖)แล้วขยิบกระซิบเสียงสำเนียงสาว ให้อ้ายบ่าวบรรเทืองกระเดื่องขวัญ
The next day when the monkey had gone to the island, the crocodile lay down on the rock in the river.
ลิงเหยียบหินกลางฉทึงอีกหนึ่งวัน ตะเข้นั้นพรางร่างกลางศิลา
"Now I have to do is wait for the monkey and catch him when he jumped on the rock!" He thought.
(๗)"และฉะนี้ฉันแค่คอยแลไว้ ลิงโดดใส่หินแข็งแว้งกัดขา"
Soon, the monkey was ready to go back. He prepared to jump onto the rock.when he noticed that the rock seemed bigger than usual.
เมื่อเจ้าจ๋อเตรียมกระโดดโขดหินมา เกิดสงกาศิลาใหญ่ไม่เหมือนเดิม
"That's strange, why is the rock bigger?I bet it's that crocodile with his silly plans again!" Said the monkey.
(๘)"หินผิดแผกมหึมากว่าทุกครั้ง" "แผนตื้นจังจระเข้คิดเล่ห์เหิม"
He then shouted to the rock"Hello, Mr. Rock, how are you today?"
เจ้าจ๋อเจี๊ยกเสวนาศิลาเดิม "วันนี้เจิมด้วยสุขรึทุกข์ทน?"
When the rock did not answer, he said, "what is the matter Mr. Rock?, why aren't you talking to me today?"
(๙)โขดหินหาตอบต่อเจ้าจ๋อถาม จึงซ้ำความเดิมแต่งแกล้งฉงน
"เอ??วันนี้พี่หินสิ้นเวทมนตร์?" "ช่างชอบกลนิ่งเฉยไม่เอ่ยกานท์"
When the crocodile heard this he thought"I better pretend to be the rock and say something!"
(๑๐)เจ้ากุมภิลจินต์ย้อมหวังปลอมเสียง คล้ายสำเนียงหินกล่าวคราวจ๋อขาน
So he said, "Oh I'm fine monkey!"
เอ่ยพจีนี่จ๋อก็สำราญ "ฉันเบิกบานบุหลันผลิก็มิเทียม"

The monkey now knew that it was the crocodile and said,"Well, Mr. Crocodile, you are clever!, you've trapped me this time, open your mouth and I'll jump in"
(๑๑)แล้วเจ้าลิงเห็นจริงทุกสิ่งสรรพ์ จึงจำนรรจ์กุมภาปัญญาเยี่ยม
"โปรดเปิดโอษฐ์ออกอ้าสง่าเตรียม" "ข้ามิเหนียมหนีหน่ายหมายโดดลง"
The crocodile was very pleased, he opened his mouth so wide that his eyes were closed.The clever monkey then jumped onto the crocodile's head and rushed to safety.
(๑๒)จระเข้พอใจใคร่เปิดปาก อ้ากว้างมากตาปิดผิดประสงค์
เจ้าจ๋อจึงกระโดดไวอย่างใจจง ณ ที่ตรงเศียรตะเข้อย่างเฮฮา
He then turned to the crocodile and said"You might be strong, Mr. Crocodile, but I'm smart and that has saved me once again
(๑๓)แล้วหันกลับกล่าววจี"กุมภีล์เอ๋ย" "ท่านใหญ่เกยหินแข็งแรงเท่าผา"
"แต่ฉันนี้มีคมปมปัญญา" "จึงรักษาตัวรอดให้ปลอดภัย"ฯ
(ผมขำตรงที่ผมก็อีกสำนวนหนึ่ง ท่านอริญชย์ก็อีกสำนวนหนึ่ง ต่างคนต่างแต่ง แต่ขึ้นต้นเหมือนกัน
